Water Testing for FSSAI licensing

Your food business, restaurant, or eating joint needs a license from FSSAI but do you know that it is highly important to get a water testing report from FSSAI notified and NABL accredited laboratory.

Notably, FSSAI Registration is applicable to all types of packaged water for drinking.

FSSAI has mandated license for selling packaged drinking water. FSSAI License is provided under the control of Government of India and the Ministry of Health and Family affairs.

According to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) fourth Amendment Regulations, 2019, the mandatory requirement of calcium and magnesium in packaged drinking water has been set at 20-75 mg/litre and in the range of 10-30 mg/litre respectively.

At Arbro, all the necessary water testing guidelines are followed with precision before a water testing report is issued to the vendor, easing the process of obtaining a license from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

As part of the application to be submitted for licensing, food businesses are required to submit a water testing report of the water they are using in their processes, confirming its compliance to the potable water standard (IS 10500:2012) prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority Of India has in recent advertisement stated that the last date for the getting licenses for existing food businesses will not be extended beyond 4 February.

All existing and new food businesses are required to apply to either the state or central licensing authorities for grant of the license or for conversion of an existing license.

Depending on the nature of the food business, they are required to either submit a complete report or a report covering the essential parameters described, including physical, chemical and microbiological parameters.

The water testing report must be obtained from an FSSAI recognized and NABL accredited laboratory. Also, it is essential that the sampling is carried out by the laboratory and the report must contain the details of the date of sampling and the person carrying out the sampling.

  • Fecal Streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus
  • Salmonella Typhi
  • Sulfate Reducing Anaerobes
  • Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
  • Yeast and mold
  • Salmonella and Shigella
  • Vibrio cholera and V. para hemolytic us

FSSAI standard of packaged drinking water

The packaged drinking water companies are required to obtain a license issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the other license would be issued by FSSAI. Companies operating with both the licenses confirm that their water is safe for drinking and has passed all the safety standards for filtration and standard quality packaging material is used that does not contaminate water.

FSSAI would issue a license only after the testing and verification process of every ingredient in the packaged drinking water.

The water companies are required to ensure that their product contains minerals like calcium and magnesium of at least 20-75 mg/litre.
