Description

Fortified Skimmed Milk is fat-free milk that has been enriched with vital micronutrients—Vitamin A and Vitamin D—as per the fortification guidelines established by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Designed to meet the nutritional needs of health-conscious individuals, this milk offers essential vitamins without the fat content of regular milk.

Skimmed milk contains less than 0.5% fat and a minimum of 8.7% solids-not-fat (SNF). While the removal of fat also eliminates fat-soluble vitamins, fortification helps restore these nutrients, ensuring the milk remains a valuable dietary source of micronutrients.

FSSAI Fortification Norms:

  • Vitamin A: 270–450 µg RE (Retinol Equivalent) per liter

  • Vitamin D: 5–7.5 µg per liter

These nutrients are added in bioavailable and heat-stable forms to maintain their efficacy during processing and shelf life.

Fortified skimmed milk is ideal for:

  • Individuals managing weight, cholesterol, or cardiovascular health

  • Those requiring nutrient-dense but low-calorie options

  • Use in public health programs, especially for adults and the elderly

The product must carry the +F logo on the packaging to indicate it has been fortified in accordance with FSSAI standards.

Purpose of Testing

  • Purpose of Testing for Fortified Skimmed Milk – As per FSSAI Guidelines

Testing of fortified skimmed milk is essential to ensure that it complies with the nutritional, compositional, safety, and labeling standards prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The key purposes include:

    • Verification of Micronutrient Fortification
To ensure that Vitamin A (270–450 µg RE/L) and Vitamin D (5–7.5 µg/L) are present within the specified limits, compensating for the natural loss of fat-soluble vitamins during fat removal.

    • Uniformity and Stability of Nutrients
To confirm that the added vitamins are evenly distributed and remain stable during processing, storage, and distribution.

    •  Compliance with Skimmed Milk Standards
To verify that the milk contains less than 0.5% fat and a minimum of 8.7% SNF, as defined for skimmed milk by FSSAI.

    •  Microbiological and Chemical Safety Checks
To detect harmful microorganisms (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli), antibiotic residues, pesticides, and heavy metals, ensuring the product is safe for human consumption.

    •  Labeling and Packaging Compliance
To confirm that the product label correctly displays the +F logo, along with accurate nutrient declarations and batch information in line with FSSAI regulations.

    • Support for Health and Wellness Programs
To validate that fortified skimmed milk used in public nutrition programs and healthcare settings delivers consistent and effective micronutrient support to the target populations.
