Description

Oxidation Hair Dyes – Type-1, as specified under IS 8481:2020, refer to hair dye developer products, which are used in combination with dye bases (Types 2 and 3) to initiate the oxidative coloring process. These developers are generally aqueous solutions or emulsions of hydrogen peroxide or other oxidizing agents, provided in liquid, gel, or cream form.

They do not contain any coloring matter themselves but are essential for activating color precursors present in other hair dye formulations. These are typically:

  • Hydrogen peroxide-based solutions (usually 6% or 9% w/v)

  • Stabilized with buffers and emulsifiers

  • Fragrance-free or mildly fragranced

  • Creamy or watery, depending on the intended usage with dye base

The product should be:

  • Chemically stable and safe for use on scalp and hair

  • Easy to mix with colorant bases

Purpose of Testing

Testing of Type-1 oxidation hair dyes under IS 8481:2020 ensures the safety, purity, and chemical efficacy of the developer solution, which is a critical part of the hair dyeing process.

Key Objectives of the Testing:

  • Determine hydrogen peroxide concentration to ensure effectiveness and safety

  • Verify pH value for scalp and formulation compatibility

  • Check chemical stability over the product’s shelf life

  • Assess physical characteristics such as clarity (for liquid), consistency (for cream/gel), and absence of separation

  • Test for heavy metals (e.g., lead, arsenic, mercury) to meet BIS limits

  • Evaluate microbiological safety to ensure the product is free from bacterial or fungal contamination

  • Ensure proper packaging and labeling, including cautionary statements and usage instructions

  • Confirm absence of prohibited substances and compliance with regulatory norms
