Description

Fortified Goat Milk is natural goat milk enriched with essential micronutrients, specifically Vitamin A and Vitamin D, in line with the guidelines set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This nutritional enhancement helps address common micronutrient deficiencies in the population, especially among children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

According to FSSAI regulations:

  • Goat milk must first meet the standard compositional requirements for fat and solids-not-fat (SNF).

  • Fortification is carried out using safe, stable, and bioavailable forms of nutrients.

Fortification Levels as per FSSAI:

  • Vitamin A: 270–450 µg RE (Retinol Equivalent) per liter

  • Vitamin D: 5–7.5 µg per liter

Fortified goat milk retains the natural digestibility and hypoallergenic properties of regular goat milk while offering enhanced nutritional benefits. It is especially beneficial for individuals with lactose intolerance or sensitivity to cow milk proteins.

To ensure transparency and regulatory compliance, all fortified goat milk products must display the +F logo on their packaging, indicating adherence to FSSAI’s food fortification standards.

Purpose of Testing

Purpose of Testing for Fortified Goat Milk – As per FSSAI Guidelines

Testing of fortified goat milk is essential to ensure compliance with FSSAI’s safety, quality, and nutritional fortification standards. The primary purposes include:

  • Validation of Micronutrient Fortification
To confirm that Vitamin A (270–450 µg RE/L) and Vitamin D (5–7.5 µg/L) are added within the permissible limits specified by FSSAI.

  • Uniformity and Stability of Nutrients
To ensure the even distribution and long-term stability of fortified nutrients during processing, storage, and transport.

  • Compliance with Goat Milk Standards
To verify the milk meets FSSAI’s compositional criteria for fat, solids-not-fat (SNF), and overall quality specific to goat milk.

  • Microbial and Chemical Safety Checks
To screen for pathogens (e.g., Salmonella, Listeria), antibiotic residues, pesticide contamination, and heavy metals that could pose health risks.

  • Labeling and Packaging Accuracy
To confirm that the fortified goat milk packaging accurately includes the +F logo and meets FSSAI labeling norms.

  • Support for Nutritional Programs
To ensure that goat milk used in public health and nutrition programs provides consistent, safe, and effective delivery of essential vitamins.
